West Riding Ruggers

The West Riding Ruggers were established 35 years ago and meet monthly to promote and preserve the heritage craft of rug-making.

Our members use a variety of different techniques, including hooking, proddy, knitting, crochet, latch and locker hooking.

On our website you will find out about forthcoming and past events, galleries of our work, ways to become a member and how to get in touch with us. We hope you enjoy browsing!

What is rug-making?

Rug-making is the craft of producing a rug from different textile materials, such as yarn and fabric.

Originally, rugs were made out of necessity or thrift but the heritage craft has expanded over time into an exciting art form.

Our rugs…

Using a variety of techniques, our members create rugs to be used, to be displayed, for self-expression and for the love of the art form.

Some of our members have been making rugs for many years but we are always keen to introduce people to our fascinating craft.

In recent years, we have participated in community events and held public workshops to raise interest in the heritage of rug-making.

‘Much of rag rug making’s appeal is that it can be picked up easily, a rolled rug can be carried from place to place and it is something to keep the hands busy.’
